Was model painted as Monalisa by Leonardo da Vinci really a male ,not a female?

Most artists put a little of themselves in their paintings. Leonardo painted himself throughout his life and there is a bone structure resemblance. But, Leonardo may also have tried to show how humans have two sides to them. Including male and female sides. No one knows for sure. Even art historians are uncertain.
