Why do people keep saying Jesus was a Jew? That's just like calling Fred Phelps a Christian, right?

Jesus was born as a Jew just as some people are born Italian or German. He was born into that culture. The Jews believe a lot of the stuff Christians believe, except fro one crucial thing: Jesus being God's son. They think that God's true son hasn't come yet, and they're still waiting for Him.
